Samsung continues their work to develop tools and platforms to help developers accelerate their efforts to implement technology that can easily be used by regular consumers. Their latest announcement on this front is for their new Internet of Things (IoT) platform called ARTIK. According to Samsung’s Young Sohn, president and chief strategy officer, “ARTIK allows developers to rapidly turn great ideas into market leading IoT products and applications.”

ARTIK is a combination of embedded hardware security technology, on-board memory and an open software platform for development. Initially, ARTIK will include three configurations:

  • ARTIK 1 – a 12mm x 12mm module packed with Bluetooth/BLE connectivity and a nine-axis sensor intended for use in low-power, small form-factor applications;
  • ARTIK 5 – a module powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor with on-board DRAM and flash memory, this unit is intended to be used in hubs, drones and possibly high-end wearables;
  • ARTIK 10 – a full solution that includes an octa-core processor, full 1080p video capabilities, 5.1 audio, 2GB of DRAM and 16GB of flash memory, the ARTIK 10 also supports WiFi, Bluetooth/BLE and ZigBee connections and is intended for use in home servers, media applications, and potentially in some industrial solutions.

In their announcement, Samsung highlighted some of the technical highlights of their new ARTIK platform, like:

  • Security and privacy which includes an embedded element to goes beyond software-based encryption and incorporates a machine learning based anomaly detection system;
  • IoT software stack so developers can move to application framework development and skip over the building of low-level software libraries;
  • Local storage and computation capability to free IoT development from a cloud connection;
  • Low-power architecture which will be especially important for battery powered devices;
  • Small form-factor to help make it easier to deploy;
  • Connectivity that comes with support for WiFi, Bluetooth and Zigbee.
