In an ever-developing world, the traditional password is quickly becoming outdated. It’s now considered to be inefficient and insecure. That’s why Yahoo is taking a rather different approach towards authentication.

Today see’s the launch of the American company’s brand new “on demand” password, which, like two-step authentication, sends users a unique time-sensitive code through an app or via a text message when they want to log in.

However, one fundamental step is missing. Users no longer need to enter a primary password after their initial log in, as “on demand” does not require a permanent password to be tied to your account.

Instead, when you attempt to sign in, you will see a “send my password” button, instead of a traditional secure password entry form. Once clicked, an 8 character combination of symbols, letters and numbers will be sent to your phone for you to enter.

The new sign-in method is available now for residents in the US. To get in on the action, simply head over to Yahoo’s website, log into your account, click your name at the top right corner and go to your account information page, select “Security” in the left bar, then click on the slider for “on demand passwords” to opt-in.
