Android News: Sony Debuts Xperia E4 Ahead of MWC

There are many reasons to visit Barcelona: art, history, architecture, food, beaches, mountains, etc. (I used to live there so I’m biased). Aside from those terrific rationales for visiting the Catalan capital, every March the telecommunications industry descends on Plaça d’Espanya at the Mobile World Congress, and event where plenty of mobile leaders debut new devices that cause us to drool over our tapas.

But if you’re attending MWC in hopes of seeing Sony take the wraps off of some new hardware, you’re not going to see it in the form of a keynote. So perhaps to lessen the blow of an un-Sony MWC, the Japanese giant has just unveiled its new Xperia E4 phone.

Fortunately, budget phones are becoming more robust each production cycle, and the E4 is no exception. Though it only has a 5-inch 860×540 IPS display, it still has 1 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GM of RAM, 8 GB of storage with a microSD slot, a 2300mAh battery, and either single or dual SIM variants.

The Xperia also boasts a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter. These lenses will be paired with Sony’s typically excellent software.

The new E4 will launch in mid-February running Android 4.4.4. KitKat, primarily in international (e.g. non-US) markets, but you can expect to see it surface Stateside, as well. No word on price.

This is certainly a step up from the current Xperia E, with its 3.5-inch screen and outdated specs, but will it be enough to go up against a burgeoning budget smartphone market? Sony has been doubling down over the past year to regain market share. Would you buy the Xperia E4 or are there better budget phones out there?
