Last week, a report was published that stated Samsung made an offer to purchase BlackBerry. The obvious reason for Samsung to go after BlackBerry would be for patents with the intent to bolster enterprise and security platform Knox. Both companies, however, moved very quickly to deny the validity of the report. Now, the leader of the mobile division at Samsung has gotten in front of the rumors to state that the company does not intend to purchase BlackBerry.
J.K. Shin, who saw his pay slashed late year, told The Wall Street Journal that Samsung’s existing partnership with BlackBerry is where the focus is. He said “We want to work with BlackBerry and develop this partnership, not acquire the company.” The technology designed by BlackBerry is expected to make its way to Samsung devices. Shin feels that acquiring BlackBerry would be a setback for Knox to grow organically. Currently, he and Samsung are content with Knox’s performance and “remain committed to Knox over the long term.”
Despite it being obvious that BlackBerry’s patents are a prime target, Samsung denied its appeal because of the thousands of patents it already owns.
