One of the hallmarks for Samsung’s last round of flagship Galaxy S 5 devices was the IP67 certification, which meant Samsung could sell “water resistance” as a key feature that set it apart from other smartphone makers on the market. However, as Samsung has struggled to maintain lofty sales numbers every feature for the next version of their flagship, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S 6 and close cousin the Galaxy S 6 Edge, was subjected to a thorough review as to whether it was worth including. Apparently water resistant qualities were not a big factor in swaying buyers to the Galaxy S line of devices and did not make the cut.
Given the extra cost to achieve the IP67 certification and the need to improve profit margins, combined with low interest from buyers, sources indicate Samsung’s new devices will not be water resistant. Buyers who want that extra measure of protection will have an option eventually though as Samsung reportedly will produce “Active” versions of their devices with water resistant qualities.
