Samsung could finally release a round smartwatch at Mobile World Congress alongside the Galaxy S 6. Unfortunately, it’s going to be Tizen-based rather than Android Wear, but there are a lot of people who own Samsung phones that could make use of it.
What’s going to be different about this particular round watch is that it will have a rotating ring that isn’t just for show. It will actually provide some features. For example, rotating it right or left will allow you to skip or go back music tracks. You will also be able to dismiss (rotate right) or snooze (rotate right) an alarm.
The ring will most likely serve as a means of navigating. For example, you will by able to cycle through different watch faces. It’s also likely that Samsung will implement the ring in particular apps, and open it to other developers to do the same. Imagine a weather app in which rotating the ring will change from the current weather, to hourly forecasts, and so on.
The real question is if this ring is just a gimmick or something useful? As we all know, each manufacturer tries so hard to differentiate themselves that things get a little ridiculous. Is a ring going to be any easier than swiping? Highly unlikely, but I guess we will have to wait until we get the watch in our hands to make that final decision.
