Patent lawsuits in the mobile industry are nothing new, and Samsung is surely one of the more prominent initiators of said lawsuits, as mostly evidenced by its ongoing volley against Apple, which Apple returns in kind.
Not to be lost in the skirmish, NVIDIA is also in Samsung’s crosshairs for alleged patent violations. There are 8 patents involved in the case overall, with NVIDIA itself receiving 6 filings and partner Velocity Micro receiving all 8. (Some of the patents involve manufacturing techniques, which can’t apply to NVIDIA.)
In the latest step, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) is now investigating NVIDIA and its partners based on the complaints filed by Samsung. The process will take years, as these things are wont to do, but it will prove a vital move in the overall lawsuit process, even if the firms eventually settle out of court.
Please note that Samsung’s suit against NVIDIA is in response to NVIDIA’s original lawsuit against Samsung. Tit for tat, ladies and gentlemen.
